1. Identification: Spondylus americanus (Herrmann, 1781), Port St. Lucie, Florida, on living coral gravel bottom in 58m depth, ex coll. Paula Honker, 1982, live taken specimen shell.

Description: This shell represents all those characteristics that made the officiel Florida pieces famous among chonchologists: It is a piece of bewildering beauty for its elongated and curved spines which are set nicely spaced on both valves thus making the lower valve equally nice as the top valve, a fact which is due to the particular habitat in rather deep water (deep is relative, after all we speak of the FL waters) were the shells grow undisturbed to produce such exuberant beauty, and my piece is equally desirable for its appetizing color which can only be described as raspberry and cream. besides all these selected qualities which make my old collection shell a rare target for the specialized collector, it also is one of those interesting pieces with rather smooth body which itself is of elegant rounded shape; there are many populations and adaptations recorded among this variable species, and I plan to list one of those very deep water specimens from nearby location in the next days to show these significantly different shells in all their glory. Shipping of such a large and fragile shell is a challenge, but you can rest assured and count on my care and experience: this shell will be packed with tender loving care in a special container box which I bought just for this shell: the piece will arrive safely in your place to be enjoyed by you and your collector friends. This is a genuine Palm Beach specimen dived in 1961 in rather deep water in prime habitat on coral gravel bottom. You can find the species these days mostly from shipwrecks (which means rusty lower valve) or from lesser depth around 40m from white coral, but those shells tend to be more massive with shorter spatulated spines and none of them compares favorably to the famous deep water specimens; sadly these beauties seem to have disappeared long ago due to habitat loss. The pictures that go with this description do no justice at all to the exceptional brilliance and intensity of the color which can only be described as magic, in fact this is a stunning shell and it comes with both valves equally densely set up with elongated spines preserved to perfection, they are foliated and very thin and fragile. Such exuberance can only develop in very deep water, which during the stormy season stays relatively quiet. The shell is truly magnificent and even the choosiest connoisseur of all will find no fault with my piece. A specimen seashell from the good old times and a piece of supreme beauty.
